VIDEO: Iraq Fragile Progress

Amid reports that the Iraqi government has lost control of Fallujah, the country is preparing to hold parliamentary elections in April, its first since the US withdrawal in 2011. The speakers discuss the most significant internal issues facing the country, and comment on the rising tensions between Iraq’s communities. Zaid Al-Ali argues that since 2010 close to no progress has been made on legal and regulatory reform or service delivery, while violence and sectarianism has increased. He believes Iraq is hampered by a flawed constitution and elitist government, solutions to which won’t be found in April’s election. Instead, he believes a road map for reform should be imposed on the ruling parties, and he will set out what the essential components of such a programme should be.
